USC Morning Buzz: Who Has Better Title Odds?

Who has better odds? Team USA to win the World Cup or USC to win the national championship?

Believe it or not, Team USA has better odds at +3300 while USC is roughly +6600.

  • Dusty May, the one-time film guy at USC, is going to become the coach of the Dallas Mavericks. It will be interesting to see how much he enjoys dealing with pro basketball players.
  • I wrote this last week but because of a glitch in the system it was posted properly. I don’t buy what Zacariah Branch said in this podcast with Amon-Ra St. Brown that he transferred because he couldn’t always access the USC weightroom. Branch mentions a lawsuit, presumably referring to the Stafon Johnson lawsuit that was filed after the accident in the weightroom in 2009.
  • I don’t buy this explanation. Branch clearly regressed in his sophomore season at USC and I think he transferred because he didn’t think he was developing under the current regime. So he went to Georgia and did look faster last season, which led to being drafted in the third round.
  • The weightroom policy was in effect when Branch was a freshman and it didn’t seem to bother me. So I don’t think it was the reason he left. Here’s the interview:

  1. DON: The odds improved recently for the U.S. soccer team as they are one of 32 teams with a chance at the title

KAM: –And so an SC football player transfers because he can’t get into the weight room?– On its face that doesn’t ring true

  2. College football changes every year because the players change. It is a difficult situation to predict for that reason. Will the young guys on the lines take a step forward. How good is the transfer cornerback and nose tackle. You don’t have this level of unpredictability with the world cup because the teams are largely professional players who are fully developed. I would take the USC football odds over those of team USA soccer. You know that France, Germany, and Brazil are going to field great teams. That is not necessarily the case with Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia, ect. One injury to a quarterback or a left tackle or lockdown corner can significantly change the odds and these things happen all the time. Remember that 2012 team with Barkley that was a preseason No. one that lost about half their games. Lost their tackles to the NFL and could not replace them.
