Saturday Buzz: USC Quietly Opens Camp

I hit a nerve Friday when I mentioned freshman wide receiver Trent Mosley was 20 years old. So is freshman safety Madden Riordan.

One interesting aspect of this is that under the NCAA’s new “five for five” eligibility plan, the five-year window starts upon full-time college enrollment or the year after turning 19.

For a quarterback, that might become an issue. This is also what happens when athletes are held back in high school or start high school late.

  • If you are looking for practice reports from Friday, Lincoln Riley is not allowing the media to attend until Tuesday and even then it will be limited to viewing stretching and light drills.

  1. wolfman was here long before Lil’ Lord Riley and will be here long after Riley continues to fall upwards to his next job. he considers this a stepping stone job, so he never felt the need to deal with local press.

kiff, sark or Riley are totally ignorant of how to deal with press. besides owning SC with a 9-1-1 record, Lou Holtz was engaging, self-effacing and would invite the press to his own home for bbq’s. he had them eating out of his hand. Never took himself seriously, although everyone else did. a master of building up opponents so when he whipped them it didn’t land so hard. do you know anyone who takes riley seriously?

  2. the closed practices are a joke. It has more to do with Riley’s Social Anxiety Disorder than secrecy. How does SC end up with these oddball coaches who are stuck for an answer when you tell them “helllo”??

  3. KAM: Wiley is going to allow the press to watch SC stretching. I don’t know if that will give us a heads-up of how they’ll do during the season

DON: First game is in 4-weeks. I can wait

Lincoln Riley cut media access to practices due to issues with Scott Wolf, indicating a desire for more control over the team’s environment. This decision reflects ongoing tensions between the coaching staff and the media.

      Media Access Restrictions

Lincoln Riley has restricted media access to USC football practices, citing issues with reporter Scott Wolf as a primary reason. This decision highlights a desire for greater control over the team’s environment and reflects ongoing tensions between the coaching staff and the media.Reasons for Restricted Access

      • Control Over Environment: Riley aims to manage the atmosphere surrounding the team more effectively.
      • Tensions with Media: The relationship between the coaching staff and certain media members, particularly Scott Wolf, has been strained.

      Impact on Coverage

      • Limited Media Presence: Media access will be restricted to observing only stretching and light drills during practices.
      • Potential Consequences: This move may affect the depth and quality of coverage regarding the USC football team, as fewer insights will be available to the public.

Riley’s actions indicate a significant shift in how the USC football program interacts with the media, potentially impacting both reporting and fan engagement.

DON: What specific issues did Scott Wolf have with Lincoln Riley?

Scott Wolf has criticized Lincoln Riley for poor defensive performance, lack of accountability, and failure to win crucial games, suggesting that Riley has not shown progress in his coaching despite multiple seasons at USC. Additionally, Wolf has expressed frustration with Riley’s stubbornness and inability to adapt, which has led to a loss of fan support.

  4. I understand the need for a ‘4th estate’ reporting what they see or even sense but question – name me one coach Wolf has ever had any kind of respect for…just one….sad thing is Wolf is a darn good reporter as evidence of his daily ‘discovery’ of USC history and lore few if any ever even heard of. I understand taking pronouncements from a coaching staff with a ‘grain of salt’ but when a coach is always deemed a (fill in the blank) so-and-so – no matter the subject matter or outcome frankly the scribe has no one but himself to blame and his actions then impact all the rest (reporters) denial of access.

  5. DON: Is it true that Wiley is frustrated with Scott Wolf?

KAM: I doubt they have ever met and I cannot imagine Wiley even reading Scott’s blog

    1. Coach Riley only hears what Scott has written when someone TRIES to pass it on to him….and then he always responds, “Stop!”
