With the USC-UCLA game tomorow, here’s a picture from the Crosstown Rivalry in 1967. The teams actually played each other four times that season. The picture above is from the championship game of the L.A. Classic. USC beat Arkansas, 70-67, and Illinois, 73-72, before losing to the Bruins, 107-83. The USC players are Bill Hewitt (33), Jim Marsh (51) and Steve Jennings (25). The UCLA … Continue reading USC Picture Of The Night
I think the defensive coordinator’s search will be a fascinating look at Mike Bohn’s influence. If Joe Barry takes it, then Bohn will rubber stamp Helton’s recommendation. But if someone without Helton ties gets it, than you will see Bohn some degree of role in it. Either way, Bohn gets to make the final call, but it just depends on how hard he wants to … Continue reading How Strong Will Mike Bohn Lead Clay Helton?
I hear Clay Helton spoke again to Joe Barry on Thursday as a follow-up to their initial interview. Can you imagine a conversation between Helton and Mike Bohn: Helton: “Well, I spoke to Joe Barry.” Bohn: “Who else?” Helton: “Well, I’m going to speak to Joe Barry again.” Bohn: “Who else did you have in mind?” Helton: “Joe Barry.” Bohn: “Here’s some other coaches you … Continue reading USC Defensive Coordinator Search Circles Back
It appears the USC coaching staff will undergo another shuffle that is a bit unexpected and certainly not discussed. Everyone knows USC needs a defensive coordinator and special teams coach. But I’m hearing Graham Harrell wants to hire a buddy to be quarterbacks coach next season. Say what? Harrell currently holds the titles of offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at USC. He might be considered a genius … Continue reading If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column
Is Clay Helton really Mr. Nice Guy like you always hear? There are plenty of people who work or have worked at USC that have a different view. Ask Tee Martin, who was constantly thrown under the bus by Helton, who insisted Martin called all the plays when Helton also had a hand in playcalling. Ask the recruiting dept. staffers who left USC because Helton … Continue reading Mr. Nice Guy?
The word in coaching circles is Joe Barry will remain with the Rams, whether as defensive coordinator or linebackers coach. Stay tuned. I’ve heard Barry has not yet been offered the USC defensive coordinator’s job. Meanwhile, USC wide receiver Velus Jones has transferred to Tennessee. A year too late, I say. Jones didn’t get to play much last season at USC. He’s back with Tee … Continue reading Joe Barry To Stay With Rams? Velus Jones Picks School
