Does USC Have 84th-Toughest Schedule?

Every year, it seems like USC has one of the nation’s toughest schedules. But if you use the NCAA formula (opponents’ records from the previous season), the Trojans have the 84th-toughest schedule according to college football analyst Phil Steele. Steele correctly notes this is not a full-proof method. Indiana had the 110th-toughest schedule last year but eight of its 12 opponents went on to play … Continue reading Does USC Have 84th-Toughest Schedule?

Sizing Up Spring Quarterback Play

USC’s nearly at the halfway point of spring practice and the quarterback play has been “extremely average,” according to a Trojans assistant coach I spoke to. That is expected since neither Matt Fink nor Jack Sears has much experience. But it also underscores the fact USC will miss Sam Darnold and some people seem blissfully unaware of this as they make their projections for the … Continue reading Sizing Up Spring Quarterback Play

USC-Alabama To Open 2020 Season?

Alabama is talking USC about opening the 2020 season at AT&T Stadium according to Birmingham TV/radio host Jim Dunaway. Alabama wants to improve its schedule and is reportedly talking to Notre Dame and Texas about home-and-home series. USC probably figures 2020 is a good time to play the Crimson Tide because JT Daniels would be a junior. That’s the positive spin theory anyways. But USC … Continue reading USC-Alabama To Open 2020 Season?

Analysis Of Sam Darnold’s Pro Day

Despite some heavy rain at times, Sam Darnold’s Pro Day was an unqualified success. For comparison, I felt it was better than Matt Leinart or Matt Barkley’s Pro Day at USC. Leinart was affected by the large crowd at Howard Jones Field that lined up outside the gates to watch his workout. Barkley’s workout was fine but not as impressive as Darnold. Darnold threw around … Continue reading Analysis Of Sam Darnold’s Pro Day

Wide Receiver Mycah Pittman Does Not List USC Among Top 10 Schools

Wide receiver Mycah Pittman of Calabasas, the younger brother of USC wide receiver Michael Pittman, did not list USC among his top 10 schools. Pittman listed Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCLA and Washington State. Maybe Pittman thinks USC has too many receivers. Or maybe he is disenchanted with USC after talking to his brother. Or maybe his father is … Continue reading Wide Receiver Mycah Pittman Does Not List USC Among Top 10 Schools

Former Kansas/West Virginia Assistant Joe DeForest Joins Staff

USC coach Clay Helton has hired Joe DeForest, who was special teams coach at Kansas last season. DeForest was the defensive coordinator at West Virginia in 2012 and then coached special teams from 2013-15. Since USC already has 10 assistant coaches, it will probably give DeForest some type of title like special teams quality control assistant. Maybe this hire will help last season’s dreadful special … Continue reading Former Kansas/West Virginia Assistant Joe DeForest Joins Staff
