If It’s Friday, It Must Be Time For A Notes Column

  • The new NCAA transfer rule allows players to participate in four games without losing their redshirt year. Imagine Jack Sears playing in four games last season and still being a redshirt? Or better yet, Clay Helton would not have been able to burn wide receiver Randall Grimes’ redshirt last season when he appeared in only three games.
  • De’Anthony Melton will work out with the Lakers today. Who else is working out with Melton in El Segundo? Justin Tillman (VCU), Yante Maten (Georgia), Peyton Aldridge (Davidson), Kyle Washington (Cincinnati) and Gabe DeVoe (Clemson).
  • The women’s track team’s thrilling come-from-behind victory in the 4×400 relay to win the NCAA championship spurred the question about greatest comebacks in USC history? The 55-24 victory over Notre Dame in 1974 is an obvious candidate.

But the greatest comeback has to be USC’s 8-7 victory over Minnesota in the College World Series. The Trojans trailed 7-0 entering the ninth inning but had eight singles, a passed ball, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base to score eight runs.

Minnesota’s starting pitcher was Dave Winfield, who struck out 15 and allowed only an infield single until the ninth inning. Winfield was removed with one out in the ninth after giving up four hits and three runs.

  • Helton hired Trey Johnson as assistant director of player personnel. Johnson held a similar role at Liberty University.
  • So Dan Hubbs is still in charge at USC. Does this mean USC is bringing him back as baseball coach? Does anyone care? I guess the fact Hubbs is in the final year of his contract means USC does not want to spend the money to hire a replacement and pay off Hubbs.
  • Former USC forward Harrison Henderson will transfer to Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

  1. It’s ironic that Scott would be knocking Dan Hubbs in a piece that includes the question, ‘what was USC’s greatest comeback?’ With UCLA on it’s way to a 19-2 victory, Hubbs rallied our team to score a run in the 4th inning. Granted, this can’t be counted as a full fledged comeback, but it’s still pretty fucking awesome.

    1. You’re being too quick on the trigger, Karma—– Helton couldn’t find the exact kind of talent he was looking for at Alabama or Clemson or Ohio State…….

      1. Thanks for the update, Uncle Rico. Trey’s resume looks a lot better than we’ve been led to believe —-and he’s got first rate recruiting experience to boot. This actually might be a good get.

  2. The ladies’ 4X4 comeback was the single greatest comeback in USC athletics history. You don’t make up that much ground on a single leg of a 4X4, especially with a fumbled transfer. And for it to also win them the National Championship? Hands down – #1 in my book.

    1. It was a great all out finish, but lets be real the Purdue runner was dead in
her tracks the last 100 + meters down the straightaway. Credit to Kendall Ellis for starting her ferocious kick at the right time or would have missed
by a nose. If the women team could have scored more than one point in
all the field events a 2nd place finish would have been sufficient.
