APR Scores Are Bad News For School . . . Not USC

USC says it posted an an all-time high APR score average for all sports for the sixth straight year. But it is football that most observers focus on.

Here are the all-important multi-year APR scores for Pac-12 football:

  1. Washington: 991
  2. Utah: 989
  3. Stanford: 986
  4. Arizona State: 980
  5. Cal: 979
  6. USC: 972
  7. Oregon State: 971
  8. Oregon: 968
  9. Colorado: 965
  10. Washington State: 960
  11. Arizona: 952
  12. UCLA: 948

UCLA is also last in the Pac-12 in men’s basketball with a score of 933. The NCAA cutoff to be eligible for the postseason is 930.

USC’s basketball APR was 973, which tied for fifth in the Pac-12. Here are the basketball scores:

  1. Stanford 997
  2. Washington 986
  3. Utah 980
  4. Arizona State 974
  5. USC 973
  6. Oregon State 973
  7. Colorado 971
  8. Washington State 970
  9. Cal 961
  10. Arizona 960
  11. Oregon 958
  12. UCLA 933

What is an APR (academic progress rate) score?

• Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.

• A team’s total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team’s Academic Progress Rate.

• In addition to a team’s current-year APR, its rolling four-year APR is also used to determine accountability.

  1. Scottie, what does your title mean? “APR Scores Are Bad News For School”? What school? ucla? Why not just replace “school” with “ucla”?

All those ucla kids (must be close to 30 now) leaving the chipper are coming home to roost.

  2. Here you go Owns.

Of the seven dirtiest teams in NCAA history, UCLA occupies two spots (Esquire.com):

    1) UCLA, 1964-75: Wooden’s Little Helper
“If the UCLA teams of the late 1960s and early 1970s were subjected to the kind of scrutiny Jerry Tarkanian and his players have been, UCLA would probably have to forfeit about eight national titles and be on probation for the next 100 years.” Who would so slander UCLA, particularly during the era of saintly coach John Wooden? Their own legendary center, Bill Walton. Booster Sam Gilbert funneled so much money to players that NCAA probationary poster boy Jerry Tarkanian quipped, “The only team with a higher payroll was the Lakers.” The NCAA didn’t take action until 1981, by which point Wooden and his ten titles had been retired for six years.
    6) UCLA, 1995: The Bruins Are Back
How quickly the stained can become clean and then stained again. In 1981, the NCAA finally ordered UCLA to cut all ties with Sam Gilbert, leading to fourteen mediocre seasons. In 1995, however, coach Jim Harrick won the school’s eleventh (and first non-Wooden) title, with nary a hint of scandal even allowing for star Ed O’Bannon having transferred from UNLV after the Rebels went on probation. A year later, Harrick was fired. Why? He lied to the university about an expense report. Harrick quickly lost all sense of ethics and settled at Georgia University, where it was revealed his son Jim Jr. taught players a class featuring exam questions like this one: “How many points does a three-point field goal account for?” Even worse: It was a multiple-choice test. The players got A’s, while Harrick received a $254,166 severance package.

    1. None of this is going to bother Owns one little bit. Want to really get to him? John Wooden was a believer —-and shaved the night before he died so that he’d look his best when he was reunited with his wife “in Heaven.”

    2. Yes, many of those NCAAs under Wooden would have been eliminated had the NCAA investigated seriously. But they weren’t willing to do that, as it would have been a complete clusterf*ck to have removed 10 or so NCAA titles from St. Wooden.

      3. Yes, Pudly —-Owns is a pagan. In Cecil B Demille’s version of the 10 Commandments, when Moses comes down from the mountain with the tablets, there are a bunch of people dancing and partying around a golden calf —led by Edward G. Robinson. Most biblical scholars say that Robinson is portraying Owns.

      1. Rod Dedeaux won 11 Titles in Baseball which is much harder than using
5 guys both ways on the court. 8 position players plus 3 starters minimum
and one or two good relief men. He was also a better person than hypocritical Wooden running a very successful trucking business at the
same time. Look it up Owns.
