That Time USC Faced Bill Russell

Bill Russell turned 86 today. He led the University of San Francisco to consecutive NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956.

The Dons, who received 33 of 34 first-place votes in the United Press preseason poll, opened the 1955-56 season by hosting USC.

Russell had 24 points, 20 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in only 25 minutes as USF won, 58-42. The final score was not indicative of the game.

When the 6-foot-9 Russell came out of the game for good with 15 minutes remaining, USF led, 43-18.

At one point, Russell scored 10 straight points and USF raced out to a 16-2 lead. He made 11 of 16 shots in the game.

Jack Dunne, a 6-3 forward, led the Trojans with 11 points and team captain Tony Psaltis added 10.

  1. Russell is greater than Jordan. He won more NCAA and NBA titles and he was a successful coach. No player has more NBA championships than Russell, who won 11 titles in a 13-year span with the Boston Celtics, the final two coming as a player/coach after the retirement of Red Auerbach.

    1. Loved Russell. He came into Hugh’s market when I was a box boy and couldn’t have been sweeter to all his fans.
Jordan did some fantastic shit, though.

    2. You are full of crap. League was weak in his days. Jordan would have
won 9 if he didn’t retire for three years. Boston had more help overall.

      1. You are full of crap. League was weak after Magic contracted AIDS, Dr J retired and Bird’s back went out. Jordan only won with Scotty Pippen. How did the Bulls win 55 games without Jordan in 1993? Pippen. The Jordan Rules big rivals were the Knicks, Portland, Utah and Phoenix. The league was never weaker than in the 1990s.

    1. From Beavers about USC and Donte Williams:

“I can say that USC has a lot of great recruiters right now and adding a guy like Donte to thier staff can help them secure the local recruits,” said Beavers Jr to 247Sports.com shortly after USC’s hire of Williams. “He’s from here. It’s easy to connect with some that’s walked the same steps that you have, that’s been in your shoes in the same area. He’s been there. He’s upfront with you. He’s not going to say no lies.”
