The Division I Council on Monday voted to allow schools to provide spring-sport student-athletes an additional season of competition and an extension of their period of eligibility.
But there is a catch: The council said it will not require athletics aid be provided at the same level awarded for 2019-20.
That means schools will be able to offer less (or zero) aid if they want. It will be up to the schools. So if a coach didn’t want an athlete to come back, the school could simply say no aid is available.
This move is being because some schools might not be able to afford the extra scholarships, or at least that is the reason being offered.
The NCAA council declined to offer winter sports an extra year of eligibility.
