USC Morning Buzz: Hail To The Chief!

Carol Folt delivered the “State of the University” speech on Wednesday via Zoom.

Folt said USC projected $300-$500 million operational deficit through June 2021 because of increased expenses and reduced revenue, grants and donations as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m convinced we will emerge from this even stronger, with a nimble infrastructure and a culture that takes risks, learns from mistakes and puts people first,” Folt said.

Folt said she could not guarantee USC would hold in-person classes in the fall and might delay the start of on-campus classes by several weeks. USC is retrofitting facilities for social distancing, she said.

“Past scandals tarnished our reputation (but we) maintain (the) highest ethical standards in everything we do as a university. If you’ve heard about it, someone at USC has done it,” she said.

Nice cut and paste from “great quotes”.

    1. 67 —Don’t you think it would be better if the quotes being cut and pasted were, in fact, “great quotes” —–and not empty talking points?

      1. You know it, brother. It is not as if we don’t hear that 50 times a day…

I would have thought that the $8.6 mill crib would have led her to “create” something just a tad better.

      1. And the problem with allowing her to live in an $8.6 million home for free while she is prez means she will fight tooth and nail to remain prez…

      2. Well in the end if she changes most of the problems I would say give her it all. That is gonna take some time unfortunately for SC followers.

  2. A buddy of mine at the university tells me that they are getting enormous flak from the students for paying premium tuition for online classes, and that the money problems are so severe that they may sell some of the hospitals.

Not a great market for selling a hospital, I would think…

  3. If you all think that is bad.., what passes for the morning newspapers had an article about Clay Helton’s taking care of his 110 adopted sons. The whole thing was so sweet it was nauseating. The man cannot open his mouth without spewing artificial sweetener- the kind that leaves a bitter aftertaste.
Towards the end there was the usual platitudes about being given the opportunity to mentor these fine adopted sons and I realized USC could trim 3 million from their projected deficit with one stroke of the pen. Declare Helton nonessential and let him go.

    1. NO football coach in USC’s history has been allowed to spew so many empty words……and I’m not even referring to all the words that come outta his mouth about how holy he believes he is — I’m talking about the OBVIOUSLY irrational excuses he invents in post loss interviews….

      1. Michael, is your bud owns smoking the holy weed again?

It is absolutely laughable that ucla has a $19 million deficit.

Athletics alone – before covid – was $30 million.

owns, forget the common core math. It is leading you astray.

So our president is in effect admitting that her administration has been in need of strength (weak), with a ponderous, unresponsive infrastructure, and a culture that covers it’s tail, is arrogant and unteachable, and couldn’t care less about individuals? Quick! Let me get out my check book!

  7. Hey Carol Folt, I think you’re forgetting about a little something, and that’s Max Nikias, and Dr. George Tinsel. Because the only people who are pretending that those Elephants aren’t in the room, are the arrogant USC, administration 😂😂

      1. As Max Nikias actually put it, “unfortunately we see this kind of conduct more frequently these days.”

  8. Memo to: ’67

Can’t find any reference to UCLA’s Athletic Dept. shouldering a $30 million deficit, but as you’re borderline senile, I’ll gladly give the benefit of the doubt.

    So UCLA $30 million deficit

At the same time, SUCCX is hemorrhaging a colossal $300 – 500 million. So Mathematically ’67, SUCCX’ NUT is a minimum 10x UCLA’s paltry deficit.

Question is ’67, will SUCCX pull a Trump and go Chapter 7.

    1. owns — $30 million is JUST from athletics…ucla (and the entire uc system) is in big trouble, given what will happen to the State’s budget for the next 2-3 fiscal years. Awful news…

What kind of Political Crapness is this? It does not say a thing on how she will raise money or make up the defeicit. You could put Hilter, Stalin, Troskly, Lenin, Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Feinstein, Castro, and the other commie socialist atheists in this role and they would say the same thing. There is no substance, just flowery crap.

    1. Pasadena, you’re gonna make a list with Hitler and Stalin and include Biden, Obama, Pelosi? I know you’re being hyperbolic, but come on. I would not put Trump in that category even if I disagree with what he does and how he does things.

    1. Depends on whether ‘infrastructure and a culture’ are the subject or only ‘culture’ is the subject. I would say the latter, but If the former then the sentence has many mistakes and should read “..with a nimble infrastructure and a culture that take risks, learn from mistakes, and put people first.”

Perhaps we can turn to Scott Wolf for his learned opinion.
