Important Announcement About USC Blog

When I started this blog 29 months ago, it was going to be more of a hobby after covering USC for more than 20 years.

I never imagined it would grow to its current size and attract such a loyal audience.

Well, now it’s time to grow even more. Today, I’m taking the InsideUSC blog to Sports Illustrated. The new address is https://www.si.com/college/usc/

The new USC blog will be the same in many ways but will have much more video, more recruiting and a stronger “community” area for comments. I hope you will join me at the new site for even more USC coverage.

Seems like most of the ucla trolls have left here, but in any case, “early success was an illusion” is exactly right.

Slovis will be the only member of a club in which a QB throws for over 500 yards and doesn’t get the game ball. Of all Clay’s bad decisions, this one is the most obvious.

  9. Tebowobama posted a serious non political comment without an obscenity? This is becoming a community. Even for the new guy.

I guess I shall post something USC football related. Can anyone blame any tight end for departing USC? Ironically TE is the strongest recruited OL position, least utilized, and has the highest defection rate. Remember when Clay wanted to run first and establish the ground game?

Does he even remember that lie?

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Tebow gets football. The big question is how can somebody who has such a nuanced understanding of football listen to Biden slur his speech and think ‘this guy’s the answer to all our problems”? Tebow’s too smart for that.
As for our “head coach”, Clay’s idea of football has always been ‘throw to your fastest guy 25 times a game.’ That guy is never gonna be the tight end…..

  10. This video highlights two aspects of USC right now:

The strength of Markese Stepp running inside.

That the O-line REALLY needs to practice on moving the sleds.

I was watching some of other Stepp’s runs, and 4 out of 5 times, he is literally doing it on his own.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. 67 —Markese could gain 2000 yards if he were running behind a great o-line —- and by that I don’t mean that he needs the o-line so much for the extra yards but he needs them so that he can finish the season and get the yards —he’s taking one hit too many on every fricking carry.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Michael, that run there shows what he is made of, and why the poor guy will get hurt if he doesn’t have holes to run through.

        Liked by 2 people

      2. 67 –I see exactly what you see: a running back pretty much doing it on his own. This raises another question —how can Clay say he LOVES his players when, by not recruiting o-linemen with the same fervor as skill players AND sticking with Callaway and Drevno, he exposes his TB’s and QB’s to so much punishment each year…
        #IfWeCanSeeIt,HeShouldSeeIt

      3. Michael, yes, the injuries to the skill players, Slovis, JT, VM, Carr, Markese, they just keep piling up. I’d love to see what this team could do with an O-line that is on par with Wisconsin. Their line is mostly 3 star guys, or less. But they really perform. Just imagine what the Trojans could be…

        Liked by 1 person

      4. 67 –in my opinion the o-line problem is a result of USC not having a young, fire-eating o-line coach. Drevno and even Callaway know more football than I could ever hope to know —- and I’m sure they did everything they could to impart it. The problem is the young kids weren’t listening. I hate to say it (cuz it’s not fair) but position coaches need to be hair- on- fire youngsters in order to reach the kids they’re coaching. Coach Baxter didn’t forget what he knew —he still had quite a bag of tricks —-but the Special Teams guys played a relaxed kind of football that got us burned all year cuz they weren’t jacked up to play…. I’ve never in my life seen so many kick off returns for TD’s against us…..or 9 yard punt returns by us…..

      5. Michael, right you are. O-line is a tough, thankless job and they need to be willing to go to battle no matter what. The position coach needs to be a guy who they respect so much and honor so much that they will do that battle, again and again.

Back to some football if we may. I believe that Helton, I mean Bohn is one move away from actually covering up Helton’s inadequacies by replacing Drevno. If USC could bring in an OL coach that could do even half of what Donte Williams is doing, the P12 would belong to USC again within two years. Problem is, is it worth it to keep the least qualified major national football program HC employed for one day longer than needed? Needed being a relative term.

    3. I diagnosed POTUS 45 with “early dementia” back in 2015 during the run up to his nomination. (I was a surgeon/physician for 30 years). POTUS 45 struggled to put cogent talking points together into a coherent or compelling statement. His ability to speak extemporaneously or answer in depth questions is non-existent. POTUS 45 is prone to using third grade vocabulary.

“I met with President…..uh… Merkel, and we had a realllly, reallly good meeting. Great. Great. Great lady.” POTUS 45 is capable of uttering clear invective. As the brain deteriorates, it takes one to their most consistent means of communicating.

Former VP Biden is likely in the mid stages of dementia and–like President Trump–incapable of being put in a room with smart adults from other powerful countries.

With the above as an introduction, amongst the most productive times (economically, domestically, and internationally) in recent American history were the years that “the Gipper” lead the US AFTER he was shot in the chest. He undoubtedly had a significant period of low blood pressure/hypoxia to the brain with resultant damage. His death from dementia (Alzheimer’s?) 15 years after leaving office is intriguing. When was POTUS 40’s dementia detectable?

Anyway, President Reagan’s advisors and likely GHW Bush likely did a great job steering the country during the second term. The Gipper as also great at compromise. Gotta think he and Tip O’neill were actually good buds.

Here are (approximately) total rushing yardage by Trojan RBs since 2016:

    2016 = 2,500 rushing yards
    2017 = 2,200 rushing yards
    2018 = 1,700 rushing yards

Slovis has better numbers than Sam in ’17. Both had comparable (underperforming) O-lines, hence all the sacks so I think the comparison is a useful one.

What Slovis doesn’t have yet is Sam’s intangible of pulling a rabbit out of a hat. But in a well-functioning offense (hint: good O-line) then we shouldn’t be needing those rabbits.

This SHOULD BE a breakthrough year.

      1. Michael, Absolutely re: Curb Your Enthusiasm. Now that is entertainment!

Not so quick story: A buddy of mine was paired with Larry David in a charity golf tournament. Larry David is a pretty good golfer, but his drive puts his ball behind behind a tree. Nowhere to go but waste a stroke to get it back into the fairway. My buddy is waiting in the cart about 20 yards awayt, but Larry David tells him to go on and that he will catch up. My buddy feels bad about just leaving Larry, so he waits anyway. Meanwhile Larry David, who now thinks he is on his own, is berating himself with the following monologue: “Larry, you su*k, you absolutely su*k! You are the worst golfer in Southern California! You know what, you are the worst in the goddam country! Hell, I bet there is nobody worse than you in Europe! China, maybe China! Or Mongolia!! You’d even su*k in Mongolia!

I loved it when Larry briefly went back to stand up [and could give a shit whether the audience liked him]. One evening —when he was really off—he started asking the audience, “what do you think? not working, right?”

  20. I was very impressed with Slovis last year. I never had a lot of faith in JT’s habit of closing his eyes and throwing off his back foot but I was nervous when he went down in game one. Slovis had some poor moments during the year but overall performed very well. I joked with my buddy during one game when Slovis was killing it that JT was googling transfer portal, I guess he may have been.

    1. Yep, Slovis did make a few rookie mistakes (BYU in particular), but the young fellow does have an arm. Take a look early in this video against Stanford:

he has to throw off of his back foot due to the pass rush, it looks like he isn’t doing all that much more than flicking his wrist (from the 47 yard line), and St. Brown catches it well inside the end zone for a TD. Roughly 52 yards in the air from his back foot and without a full windup.

      1. Yeah —To Brad’s point: Slovis not only doesn’t panic, he might be too brave for his own good….

I feel sad for the younger people in America who’ve watched both parties descend into nominating two old, demented, geezers. I can see why so many of my young (Millenial) friends have dumped BOTH major parties. (I was way ahead of them, dumping the Dems/Repubs in 2004).

I have hope that young minded Boomers, and the “GenXials” and Millenials will take center stage the next 4 years.

      2. Oh man, when I first saw your post, I had no idea Peter Green had passed. He was one of Hendrix’s favorite blues guitarists. Sadly, we’ll never know what happened when Green and the other Fleetwood Mac guitarist, Danny Kirwan went to the that German commune around 1970, and neither was cognitively the same after they were rescued. We collectively lost 2 amazing blues/rock guitarists.

Green wrote Black Magic Woman, even though almost everyone associates it with Carlos Santana:

      3. Kenwible, yes, I think both Peter Green and Danny Kirwan left the band shortly after that German commune visit. Both of those guys were heavily into drugs, and I think that 48 hour binge in Germany put them over the edge, and they never came back to earth. Two remarkable guitarists, gone.

It is amazing that both Fleetwood and McVie are still reasonably coherent.

      2. Michael, I used to think that one of SC’s big problems was that they ALWAYS hired insiders. Now, I look at the hiring of Folt, who was as much of an outsider as you could find, and look what is happening. It is a shame. Too bad the protests aren’t about the BOT and Caruso and Folt. Clean house there, and we can get things back on course.

Would you have heckled her off the lectern during her presentation, TO, because her speech did not agree with your beliefs? I believe many MAJOR universities heckled her “to death” or simply cancelled her visits simply because she brought an opposing viewpoint to an “institution of higher learning.”

      2. On may 29, two federal security officers guarding a courthouse in Oakland, California, were ambushed by machine-gun fire as elsewhere in the city demonstrators marched peacefully to protest the killing of George Floyd. One of the guards, David Patrick Underwood, died as a result of the attack, and the other was wounded. For days, conservative news broadcasters pinned the blame on “antifa,” the loosely affiliated group of anti-fascist anarchists known to attack property and far-right demonstrators at protests. But the alleged culprit, apprehended a week later, turned out to be a 32-year-old Air Force sergeant named Steven Carrillo, the head of a squadron called the Phoenix Ravens, which guards military installations from terrorist attacks.

According to prosecutors, Carrillo and an accomplice, 30-year-old Robert A. Justus Jr., were part of the “boogaloo” movement, a patchwork of right-leaning anti-government libertarians, Second Amendment advocates, and gun enthusiasts all preparing for another American civil war.

Authorities say that when they went to apprehend Carrillo at his residence, he attacked them with pipe bombs, killing a police sergeant named Damon Gutzwiller. Investigators found a boogaloo-themed patch in a vehicle used by Carrillo. And Carrillo had scrawled boog, along with various boogaloo slogans, in his own blood on the hood of a car.

      4. Michael, in 1968 Johnson was failing badly because of the Viet Nam war and Eugene McCarthy was making Johnson look bad in the early primaries. I think it was around May or June that Robert Kennedy jumped into the race which was the eventual cause of Johnson jumping out of the race.
Now if Trump could see the light and jump out, it would give the Republican Party a chance (slim I admit) to come up with a viable candidate.

Interesting Meyer has K.J. Costello in the top 5.

K.J. is going to have culture shock moving from Silicon Valley to Starkville, MIssissippi. If possible, he will really need to improve his quickness and avoid the pass rush…he seemed really slow (at least to me) in the Pac-12…
