Important Announcement About USC Blog

When I started this blog 29 months ago, it was going to be more of a hobby after covering USC for more than 20 years.

I never imagined it would grow to its current size and attract such a loyal audience.

Well, now it’s time to grow even more. Today, I’m taking the InsideUSC blog to Sports Illustrated. The new address is https://www.si.com/college/usc/

The new USC blog will be the same in many ways but will have much more video, more recruiting and a stronger “community” area for comments. I hope you will join me at the new site for even more USC coverage.

    2. Good news for Jake and for the Pac12.

      While there will be some “hiccups,” I think the Power 3 conferences will get their season
      “accomplished,” recruiting will follow the money and success trail for the Power 3, and their loyal fans will be rewarded–even if they have “virtual tailgates,” etc. The players will benefit by gameday competition. The American consumer will figure out how to passionately enjoy their past-times–esp in these three diverse regions of America which support the CFB game so passionately.

      While I’m a lukewarmish Broncos fan, here in Denver I’m trying to figure out ways to have game day parties with TV/football/food and good brews (I save the Bourbon for Trojan victories!)

      And the Pac 12 will again fall even lower in prestige. My concern is that all the money and effort lavished on HS FB in California (“the hotbed”) will be squandered as the best talent will leave the state and play for the more progressive conferences (presently the Power 3+ND). So California HS FB becomes a “feeder” program for the SEC/ACC/little 12.

      2. Similar to what happened in the early 1980s in mens hoops when ESPN began with the advent of the satellite network. The Pac 10 back then ignored ESPN and instead was on some obscure sports network and soon top recruits began going East to the Big East and ACC over the Pac 12. The Pac 12 has never recovered from that cultural shift in mens hoops. The last time the Pac 10/12 mattered was mens hoops champ Zona Zogs 23 years ago.

I went to a small K-8th school in a rural area and each year each class would do a play before the other kids celebrating some aspect America’s heritage ( Native Americans, the Gold Rush, The Revolutionary War, the Space Race etc). I returned a few years ago to see my niece’s class do their play at the same school and it was Marlo Thomas Marxist propaganda.

    Thinking about last night’s Republican Convention today at the gym, I realized that Trump isn’t just running for re-election:

    The story he’s telling at the RNC is also about saving America from the race war that the left is trying to foment.

    The left wants it to be black vs. white, immigrant vs. native, etc. Trump’s making clear that it’s about people who are constructive, productive, and generally happy, vs. people who are destructive, parasitic, and generally miserable, and that that difference transcends things like race.

    This is a huge, underappreciated — and very traditionally American — message.

    By promoting it at this crucial time, Trump may very well be saving America.

    ESPN, Time Warner and Nike won’t let it happen, will they? So much for Q3 2020 earnings.

      With all the time I no longer spend watching sports,
      1. My house is now beyond spotless.
      2. Haven’t been this trim since University days
      3. Already prepping my taxes for 2021 (ugh)
      4. Watching more (and, egad, “enjoying”) RomComs and ChickFlix with my wife*

      A huge part of sports is “us”–the passionate fans and spectators and sports barflies.
      Without us in the arena, sports are not spectacle. More like a “made for TV movie.”

      If the NBA/WNBA and MLB shut down, I’m fine. Been a huge NBA fan since Wilt/Elgin/West and Stumpy Goodrich. Always a great product. We’ll see what the NBA/WNBA products are like in 2021. While MLB has enjoyed quite a rise in popularity, MLB has seen a drastic decline in the number of men of Color playing the game. Hmmm. I’m also not gonna watch a 3 hr game routinely. Paying $150 a ticket and $10 for some truffle fries and $12 a beer at PacBell park while freezing my ass off in July is no longer high on my “to do” list

      *OK, maybe I haven’t really enjoyed them, but my wife is a lot happier with me!
