When I started this blog 29 months ago, it was going to be more of a hobby after covering USC for more than 20 years.
I never imagined it would grow to its current size and attract such a loyal audience.
Well, now it’s time to grow even more. Today, I’m taking the InsideUSC blog to Sports Illustrated. The new address is https://www.si.com/college/usc/
The new USC blog will be the same in many ways but will have much more video, more recruiting and a stronger “community” area for comments. I hope you will join me at the new site for even more USC coverage.

President Trump’s Thursday night convention speech making the case for his reelection was lower-rated than his challenger Joe Biden’s speech one week ago, according to overnight Nielsen ratings.
About 23.8 million viewers watched coverage of Trump’s RNC address across thirteen cable and broadcast networks, down from 24.6 million viewers who watched Biden’s DNC address on twelve of those same networks.
The gap between Biden and Trump was wider earlier in the day, when fewer networks were counted in the total. Nielsen released its final audience estimate late on Friday afternoon, bringing Trump within a million viewers. Still, Biden clearly edged out Trump

“Educator solidarity: “We will not allow racism to get in the way of educating our students with dignity”
Educators across LA and beyond are standing in solidarity with a UTLA member who was harassed with hate speech and threats for her commitment to teach equality and racial justice.
The incident started on August 10, when El Camino Real Charter teachers began distance teaching online, and a parent took a photo of an educator wearing an “I Can’t Breathe” shirt while she was introducing herself to her students.
The teacher, along with several other educators from the school, was participating in a national movement of educators called Black Lives Matter at Schools and their “Year of Purpose” to go “Black to School.” The parent posted the teacher’s picture online, along with criticism of her syllabus, which featured authors of color writing about living in a biased world. That post started circulating on Facebook and other social media sites, specifically many known alt-right white supremacist groups, where it became a witch-hunt to get the teacher fired and revoke her credential for pushing so-called political viewpoints. Soon after, someone shared the teacher’s address online, forcing her and her daughter to hide out. The teacher has filed a restraining order against a parent at the school and two other men.
With the outpouring of hate also came an outpouring of support, in the form of expressions of outrage and solidarity and a Go Fund Me for the teacher organized by El Camino colleague Kyna Collins.
“We must stand up against the deeply-rooted, insidious racism that exists in our educational system through policies and procedures and we must actively work to create anti-racist school spaces,” Collins says. “That means that we must decolonize our curricula, have tough conversations with colleagues, and examine and reflect on our own biases, all while giving voice to our students who are leading the way. At El Camino, we affirm that Black Lives Matter and we will unapologetically fight with the rest of our union family to eliminate anti-Blackness. The attacks on this teacher are unacceptable and harmful to our entire community. We will not allow racism to get in the way of educating our students with dignity. Black Lives Matter.”
UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz says that educators will not be silenced.
“This kind of intimidation won’t work,” says Myart-Cruz, who sent a letter to the school’s executive director calling for action. “We will see more Black Lives Matter shirts, not fewer. We will see more teaching of racial and social justice, not less. Simply saying Black Lives Matter is not enough: Educators and administrators must actively show it in their work in creating and promoting anti-racist curriculum.”

A little enforced New York City regulation requires that teachers remain politically neutral when performing official duties. In 2008, Mayor Michael Bloomberg ruled that public school teachers could not wear political buttons in the classroom. The teachers’ union challenged the ban but it was upheld by Federal District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan. Kaplan declared it was up to individual school districts to determine whether buttons in the classroom interfered with learning. However, he warned “school officials may not take a sledgehammer to freedom of expression.” A similar ban on political buttons in San Diego schools was upheld by California courts in 1996.

To help teachers navigate treacherous waters, in 2015 the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) issued an updated version on the free speech rights of teachers developed by its Washington State branch.
According to the ACLU’s interpretation of the Constitution and the law, “Generally, the First Amendment protects your speech if you are speaking as a private citizen on a matter of public concern. However, if you are speaking in an official capacity (within the duties of your job), your speech will not have the same protection.
In addition, “School districts have the authority to control course content and teaching methods. You are generally considered to speak for the school district when you are in your classroom. Therefore, your speech in the classroom does not have much First Amendment protection. This can be a murky area, however. Some courts have ruled that schools cannot discipline teachers for sharing words or concepts that are controversial as long as the school has no legitimate interest in restricting that speech and the speech is related to the curriculum. In general, you should exercise caution so as not to give the appearance that you are advocating a particular religious or political view in the classroom.” The same goes for classroom displays.
While “The Supreme Court has ruled that students can wear armbands to school as an expression of their political views and that their right to free speech can only be limited if the speech would cause “substantial and material disruption” . . . The right of teachers to express their views in school on public matters is not so clear . . . Courts have also upheld discipline for teachers wearing T-shirts with political messages or slogans.”
