Important Announcement About USC Blog

When I started this blog 29 months ago, it was going to be more of a hobby after covering USC for more than 20 years.

I never imagined it would grow to its current size and attract such a loyal audience.

Well, now it’s time to grow even more. Today, I’m taking the InsideUSC blog to Sports Illustrated. The new address is https://www.si.com/college/usc/

The new USC blog will be the same in many ways but will have much more video, more recruiting and a stronger “community” area for comments. I hope you will join me at the new site for even more USC coverage.

  1. Here is the new “lightning” for “Thunder and Lighting, 2.0”

Kenan Christon’s 55 yard TD run last year. Check out the blocking. Just a small hole needed, for a nanosecond.

Once he is through that hole, it becomes obvious he is the fastest guy on the field by 5-10 yards. Explosiveness we haven’t seen in many years. Many back to Reggie? Or McKnight?

      1. Exactly – the AZ defender had a GREAT angle on him, but it wasn’t close. So far from close that Christon slows up the last 5 yards when it is obvious the race is over.

      1. I agree. It should be in his best interest to throw out the first pitch. But perhaps his handlers were anticipating enormous booing? That would have been extremely bad form from the crowd (and unprecedented, as far as I know), but maybe that was the reason? But no question that POTUS needs to create some good.

      2. BTW, why is it that throwing a baseball about 60 feet seems to be so incredibly difficult? Can’t be just nerves, look at how some hold the ball…

      3. Two possible answers:
Q: Why so hard to get ball to fricking catcher?
        (1) “First Pitch” candidates are forced to sign contracts which read “I promise to make a fool of myself”…. OR…
        (2) They’re trying too hard to windup and throw a strike instead of just throwing the damn ball to the catcher like you’re playing catch with your kid….

  3. Interesting to read articles from national writers who don’t follow USC. The article below discusses “the most difficult offensive backfields that Oregon will face.” USC is ranked as being the most difficult, because of Slovis, whom they call putting up “video game numbers.” They think VM will start (I hope it is an open competition) and they have no idea what Stepp nor Christon can do.

        Grim news.

Every time during the HeltSarkiffin era that USC received so much preseason hype, the program fell flat on its face–usually by mid-September.

While we on this site know that this year’s team could be “special,” I hate for the team to get over-hyped.

      6. kenwible —Back when Biden was still Biden (i.e., before his apparent mini stroke), he was the only person in the Obama administration who was sharp enough to oppose going into Libya (or supporting so called NATO forces going into Libya). Hillary, Rice and Samantha Power couldn’t wait to go in. They already had a “transitional government” all set up to take over power. Hillary sent her buddy Simon Blumenthal to Libya to check out how much money could be made from the oil (all the emails going back and forth between them are forever lost….thanks to Hillary).
The version of Biden that opposed this horribly unnecessary war would have made a good President —-but that isn’t the Biden who’s running in 2020.

And talk about being one of the elites, Kamala filed an appeal on a lawsuit that was won by 9 middle-school kids (all but one who would be considered as children of color) who sued the state for the crappy education they were getting. The kids won, miraculously, then 48 hours later, as state AG, Kamala filed an appeal, given the enormous importance of teacher unions in the state who didn’t want teacher tenure thrown out, and who didn’t want merit-based pay for teachers.

    1. This Democrat sums up how far Alra Kalifornia has fallen:

      JOEL KOTKIN: California’s Woke Hypocrisy.

No state wears its multicultural veneer more ostentatiously than California. The Golden State’s leaders believe that they lead a progressive paradise, ushering in what theorists Laura Tyson and Lenny Mendonca call “a new progressive era.” Others see California as deserving of nationhood; it reflects, as a New York Times columnist put it, “the shared values of our increasingly tolerant and pluralistic society.”

In response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti announced plans to defund the police—a move applauded by Senator Kamala Harris, a prospective Democratic vice presidential candidate, despite the city’s steep rise in homicides. San Francisco mayor London Breed wants to do the same in her increasingly crime-ridden, disordered city. This follows state attorney general Xavier Becerra’s numerous immigration-related lawsuits against the Trump administration, even as his state has become a sanctuary for illegal immigrants—complete with driver’s licenses for some 1 million and free health care.

Despite these progressive intentions, Hispanics and African-Americans—some 45 percent of California’s total population—fare worse in the state than almost anywhere nationwide.

What is liberal about millions of the poorest poor living alongside such incredible wealth?

As a former Californian (admittedly with a tiny Winter beach cottage in Monterey), when I bring the vast income/wealth disparity point up with my friends in California, they blame the income disparity on the poor Latino people living in the Republican strongholds of the Central Valley. They call it the “new Appalachia.”

US economy posts its worst drop on record

    11:37 AM EDT, Thu July 30, 2020

The US economy contracted at a 32.9% annual rate from April through June, its worst drop on record, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said Thursday.

Business ground to a halt during the pandemic lockdown in the spring of this year, and America plunged into its first recession in 11 years, putting an end to the longest economic expansion in US history and wiping out five years of economic gains in just a few months.

A recession is commonly defined as two consecutive quarters of declining gross domestic product — the broadest measure of the economy. Between January and March, GDP declined by an annualized rate of 5%

But this is no ordinary recession. The combination of public health and economic crises is unprecedented, and numbers cannot fully convey the hardships millions of Americans are facing.

In April, more than 20 million American jobs vanished as businesses closed and most of the country was under stay-at-home orders. It was the biggest drop in jobs since record-keeping began more than 80 years ago.

Claims for unemployment benefits skyrocketed and have still not recovered to pre-pandemic levels.

While the labor market has been rebounding since states began to reopen, bringing millions back to work, the country is still down nearly 15 million jobs since February. Next week’s July jobs report is expected to show another 2.3 million jobs added. That would bring the unemployment rate down to 10.3% — still higher than during the worst period of the financial crisis.

Previously, a cabal would sit down and watch games and give beauty marks to some schools…”team so-and-so had an impressive out of conference victory so we scored them higher….

Get rid of the cabal and settle the CFB championship on the gridiron.
