Important Announcement About USC Blog

When I started this blog 29 months ago, it was going to be more of a hobby after covering USC for more than 20 years.

I never imagined it would grow to its current size and attract such a loyal audience.

Well, now it’s time to grow even more. Today, I’m taking the InsideUSC blog to Sports Illustrated. The new address is https://www.si.com/college/usc/

The new USC blog will be the same in many ways but will have much more video, more recruiting and a stronger “community” area for comments. I hope you will join me at the new site for even more USC coverage.

      I’m sure I’ll see it elsewhere in this “thread,” but it seems that Governor Nuisance has now declared Trick or Treating too risky for little children WHO ARE ALREADY SOCIAL DISTANCING AND WEARING A MASK for cripesake!* I suspect the Governor is still fine with protests and rioting/looting without social distancing, however.

      Add trick or treating to the growing list of activities “too dangerous” to permit during COVID.

      My friend Buddahkarma could insert saltier language.

      1. Me too… gallows humor is all we have right now. If the Pac 12 conference doesn’t play football we will sink to WAC standards as top recruits will see the ACC/SEC/Big12 and flock there.

        As a baby City Attorney I was walking down the steps of Los Angeles City Hall to go over to the Criminal Courts building when —out of the blue —I spied Raquel Welch in a white jump suit doing a scene from Mother, Jugs and Speed at the bottom of the stairs. [There may have been other actors with her….but for some reason I don’t remember]. Two thoughts –she was more beautiful and a lot shorter than I imagined her.

  16. Wall Street Explains Why Despite A “Second Wave” In COVID Cases, Deaths Have Barely Budged.

    Picking up on this point at a time when many countries in Europe are suffering from a second wave of covid infections (as shown in the chart above) DB’s Jim Reid writes that “in recent days and weeks, concern has risen that Europe could be at the beginning of a second wave of the pandemic.” He adds that just in his native UK “the number of confirmed cases rose by 2,988 yesterday, which was the largest daily increase since May 22.”

    Yet noting the point brought up by Goldman above, Reid then counters that even as case numbers have risen, “hospitalizations and deaths have thankfully not.”

    A key reason for this – as we first discussed in July in “The Under-40s Dilemma” – is that it’s now younger people who are more likely to get the virus.

    As Reid points out, while most of this evidence has been anecdotal across the world the attached chart from Public Health England provides some telling statistics: back at the peak of the pandemic in late March, 61% of the confirmed cases were among those over 60. But they now make up just 11% of cases. For over 80 year olds it’s dropped from 28% to 3%. For those under 40 it’s the reverse picture with cases increasing from 14% to 67% of the total.

    By and large, COVID doesn’t kill under-40s. And especially 18-22 year old football players.

      Pardon the wonkishness.

      I logged onto the CDC site yesterday looking at “excess deaths” during COVID.
      The charts compare various deaths over a 5 year period and compare COVID 2020 to all deaths 2015-2019. As expected, there was an “excess (overall) death rate” (or unexpected rise in deaths) during the COVID spike in Winter/Spring 2020, but surprisingly an overall lowering of deaths in America overall this Summer. My guess is that we will see fewer traffic fatalities in 2020 as a “sidebar” story to COVID.
      Along with that prediction, I suspect that we will see fewer “iatrogenic” hospital deaths as fewer old people are (unnecessarily?) admitted to the hospital for problems better dealt with in the safety of home with a home health aid.

      Anyway, all wonk aside, COVID has ruthlessly taken a large chunk of America’s elderly with it, and I feel horrible for the families so affected. You can see a similar effect from the flu of 2018 which was quite ruthless also.

      America has a choice in a few weeks. Gonna be interesting in how it proceeds.
      Just don’t go out and trick or treat before the election.

        I had a young doctor friend who nailed the Porky Pig imitation.
        On 5AM bedside rounds–after being up for 23 hrs straight–he’d go into full Porky Pig mode explaining a patient’s hospital course, vital signs, lab results, and prognosis.
        After 23 hours of battling acute diseases and the omnipresent urban violent trauma, we’d be in stitches. Got us through the next 12 hours of the workday before we got home to a comfy bed.

    1. I’m sure that soft & spongy Barr met with Durham in March and Durham told him, “I don’t have ANY evidence of corrupt intent against the FBI. Just because they knowingly misrepresented evidence of probable cause to the FISA court AND sent emails saying IF Trump won they’d use their illegal wiretaps as “an insurance policy” doesn’t mean they’ve done anything wrong.” And Barr said “looks like I picked the right man for this case! I’ll check back with you right after Biden’s won and we’ll see where were at.”

    1. I have a friend in Sacramento who knows the person discussed in the article, whom he says spends half his time fighting with state bureaucrats to get approvals to do anything.

      The comments on that article are very illuminating.
