Important Announcement About USC Blog

When I started this blog 29 months ago, it was going to be more of a hobby after covering USC for more than 20 years.

I never imagined it would grow to its current size and attract such a loyal audience.

Well, now it’s time to grow even more. Today, I’m taking the InsideUSC blog to Sports Illustrated. The new address is https://www.si.com/college/usc/

The new USC blog will be the same in many ways but will have much more video, more recruiting and a stronger “community” area for comments. I hope you will join me at the new site for even more USC coverage.

        Helps protect my sanity.

I stopped listening to politicians way back in the mid 1990’s.
        Sure helped protect my sanity.

Definitely stopped listening to entertainers and musicians way back then, also.
        Definitely helped protect my sanity.

I’m now wondering if I can listen to my fellow health care professionals….
Thankfully, I can listen to my wife. Keeps me sane.

    1. Bourbon — I know what you mean. My ‘friends’ in the legal profession have been sending me such dim witted emails (“I’d be out rioting if it weren’t for covid”) that I am forced to think back to the days we spent in courtrooms together to maintain any affection for them. [I think a large part of the problem with my little circle of friends is they never really thought about the ‘big’ issues before 2020—- things like do they believe in the essential goodness of people, do they believe in some kind of God, do they love their spouse —those kind of questions. In short, they don’t know who they are. Now they’ve got a political movement ready, willing and able to TELL them who they are —and it turns out they’re bad and they deserve to get punished—and they’re buying it].

I delved deeper into the “psychology” of the sycophant this past week.
Alas, too much time on my hands….

Best summary definition I found for a sycophant?

        “Kiss UP. Kick DOWN.”

I would expect such behavior in politics. It is the sine qua non of political success.
In Music and Entertainment? FOR SURE!

        In Education? No.
The Law and Medicine? Hell no.
        Science and technology? Hell no.
Finally, in Publicly held American Business Firms (outside of marketing/advertising), hell no.

Great thing about this bunch here? No sycophants. Probably why we liked having Just Owns around.

      1. Interesting (and poignant) story about Dean. After his son died in that plane crash, he would go to Dino’s every night, sit in the dark at one of the tables in the back of the restaurant and just stare off into space. Sinatra wanted to pull him back on tour but Dean said his heart wasn’t into it anymore. Deep down he wasn’t the guy he played for so many years.

      1. Biden for president is the biggest joke ever perpetrated on this country. Mort Sahl once said that if the media REALLY concentrated —for a full year— on selling the country on the idea that Bob Hope assassinated JFK, a majority of Americans would eventually buy it. I always if he was right —if the majority of people in this country could be convinced of something obviously untrue if it were repeated often enough….

He seemed to tells the day’s news with a bit of a sardonic grin.

Wasn’t he also on KTTV or was it KTLA?

      4. George was great. He was, maybe, 90 when he did a series of interviews with me on some L. A. radio station. His first words to me were “relax and have fun –we’re gonna have a good time.” And my last memory of him is watching him RUN up a flight of stairs to get to get back to the broadcasting booth after shaking my hand in the downstairs lobby.

      5. More on George Putnam:

He was known for his catchy phrases “That’s the up-to-the-minute news, and up-to-the-minute that’s all the news” at the end of his broadcast. He concluded the 5:00 PM news with a teaser, inviting viewers back to get the full story at the station’s late evening news program, smiling his signature close, “News at ten, see ya then.

Over his career, the “tall, wavy haired” fella anchored all four of the independent TV news stations back then: KHJ, KCOP, KTLA, and KTTV. If ya’ wanted to know what was going on in LA, had to watch George’s 10PM broadcast.

I know you had fun with the interviews.

  2. Did the Globe discover that 72% of black girls have no father at home so they act out at school mor

The Boston Globe purports to be concerned that African American girls are being disciplined in school more often than white girls. If they’d looked, they probably would’ve also found that white girls are disciplined more often than Asian American girls and that boys are disciplined more often than girls. None of this, however, is proof of discrimination. The Commission on Civil Rights did a poorly reasoned report on this last year. Here is my dissent from that report, which (among other things) discusses the fact that students report their own misconduct at rates that differ by race.

    1. More bad news for senileobama!

Now Bahrain? Trump Really Does Deserve the Nobel Peace Prize!

Donald Trump (with significant help from Jared Kushner and Mike Pompeo) seems to be doing what few thought possible after decades of Oslo Accords failure—bringing peace to the Middle East.

Only the other day, to the consternation of the usual suspects, the president was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for helping engineer the new peace agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel.

Now we have Bahrain added to the mix, apparently also making a deal with the Jewish state.

Cementing those ties, Bahrain Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa will be arriving in Washington Monday to attend the Tuesday ceremony where Israel and the UAE will formalize their ties, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Saudi Arabia—that is known to have been sharing intelligence with Israel for some time and is now allowing overflights of its territory by El Al—seems poised for a similar recognition.

How could this have happened? It could not be more obvious it all began to reach fruition when Trump withdrew from the Iran Deal—the awkwardly-named Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JPCOA). Some action!

Why Barack Obama wanted to enter into such a bizarre and ineffectual semi-agreement (it was never really formalized) with the biggest state sponsor of terrorism remains one of the mysteries of our era.

Theories exist, but suffice it to say the net result was billions in the mullahs’ coffers with which they were able to finance their murderous proxies (Hezbollah, Houthis, Hamas, et. al.), build missiles and other advanced weaponry and extend the Syrian civil war with another quarter of a million corpses not to mention millions more refugees.

That Joe Biden wishes to return to this insanity is reason enough to ban him from all public offices in perpetuity. . . .

Meanwhile, one thing is clear. Trump, unlike so many before him, really does deserve that Nobel Peace Prize. He is earning it for actual achievements on the ground.

His predecessor, Barack Obama, won one before he did anything at all, just for “being cool.”

They should have given that, posthumously, to Miles Davis.

      Heh.

    2. gotroy22:
My wife and I were watching a truly gripping episode of PBS’ Frontline on the NRA and gun control recently. After the massacre of children at Sandy Hook, an obviously shaken President Obama gave the reigns to his trusty VP Biden, with the implicit proviso to “get gun control done!” It was a simple order. Background checks, gun-show loophole, etc.
Many Republicans were ready to join in a bi-partisan deal and LARGE segments of the NRA were “on board.”

The two had just won a resounding re-election, so politics for them was not an issue.

Months later, VP Biden failed–spectacularly–of course. He obviously did not have the respect of leadership from either chamber. In a very terse press conference, President Obama came to the lectern flanked by VP Biden and several of the still grieving Sandy Hook parents. The President gave a 30 second or so summary to the Press Corps, turned away from Biden and hugged several of the grieving parents behind him, and walked away without answering questions and without even recognizing the old man to his right.

      Actions speak louder…

Stand up, doff your cap, cross your heart if you wish, salute if you are in uniform, sing if you wish. At the crescendo, scream and cheer if you wish.

I am also absolutely certain that Social Justice messaging AFTER the National Anthem should be done if the Professional organizations or Universities, or High Schools wish to include it in their sporting event. The more that this message gets out, the more we can (BEGIN to..) discuss the truths and lies which surround justice in America.

Don’t fear the discussion. The truth will come out.
