Important Announcement About USC Blog

When I started this blog 29 months ago, it was going to be more of a hobby after covering USC for more than 20 years.

I never imagined it would grow to its current size and attract such a loyal audience.

Well, now it’s time to grow even more. Today, I’m taking the InsideUSC blog to Sports Illustrated. The new address is https://www.si.com/college/usc/

The new USC blog will be the same in many ways but will have much more video, more recruiting and a stronger “community” area for comments. I hope you will join me at the new site for even more USC coverage.

      Joe Farley, one of the “undecided voters” at the Biden/CNN propaganda town hall in Moosic, Pennsvania tonight made a very compelling story. Joe Farley claimed that he was a healthcare worker who makes less than $15/hr and was struggling to make ends meet. Farley claims things have gotten so bad during the pandemic that he had to get a 25% interest credit card just to buy food. I don’t know if any of this is true or not, it could be, but the “undecided voter” BS was complete and total BS. Farley even grew a beard for the town hall in hopes people wouldn’t recognize his Democrat activism in Scranton. Based on this now deleted photo from his social media account, it looks like he hand enough money to travel to Milwaukee during the Democrat convention in August and pose for photos with Biden. Not bad for a dude struggling to put food on the table. Oh. Mr. Farley also attended a Trump rally at the Old Forge on August 20th. He did so as a Biden supporter to show support for Biden. Really undecided huh?

Daley ran a city that worked — money was actually spent on infrastructure and renewal, streets were maintained, park services were offered seven days a week, police & fire responded to any and all emergencies, businesses were protected not reviled —organized crime had it’s place at the table BUT they didn’t RUN things….

    I was a seventeen year old nobody. He was the world’s biggest rock star. It was spring 1986. My dad’s band, Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO), was opening for Van Halen on their “5150” tour. I was in high school at the time, but as Dad could never see the point of school when there was rock-and-rolling to be done, he called one day to ask if I wanted to ditch school to fly out and hang with him on the Van Halen tour for a few weeks.

    It was the easiest question in human history to answer: Yes, I want to ditch school and go on tour with Van Halen. Just thinking about it felt like a dream. I’d spent most of the past few years trying to learn how to play Edward’s guitar parts on “Eruption”, “Spanish Fly”, “Hot for Teacher”, “Ice Cream Man”, “Cathedral” (which I played at the church talent show), and dozens of other pieces. And Van Halen was the biggest band in the world at the time; every 20, 30, 40,000 seat date on the tour was sold out. The new album with Sammy was Number One on the Billboard charts. The three singles off the album were either smashes already or on their way.

    Even better, this was the eighties—you know, when the world was still fun. There was light. There was laughter. There was big hair and acid-washed denim, just because, dammit. You could still make jokes without a Twitter mob destroying your life forever. You could try a backyard bike stunt without your friend videoing your subsequent crash on his smartphone, then uploading it on to YouTube for your grandchildren to watch fifty years later. Even with its occasional dips, the Reagan economy boomed along. Girls were still mostly cheerful and cute and sexy; they weren’t the lost, hard, paranoid, alternately self-loathing/self-worshipping communist nihilists they are now. It was clear even then—not just in retrospect—the world was in a pretty fun phase. Hell yeah, I wanted to go.

    3. I nominate this–GT22–as best OVERALL post of the “post InsideUSC” era!
      While many of you have had awesome posts in this era, this is #1/7000+

      For those of us who “grew up” with Van Halen, were lucky enough to see them at least once (the infamous “US” festival for me, when VH headlined what was a 12+ hr Rock-a-thon Festival out in a dusty field near Interstate 15), and scrimped and saved to buy each vinyl album THE DAY IT WAS RELEASED, this post captures those halcyon days.

      I also was a true BTO fan, along with a true Guess Who fan. Way to go Tal! Hell, I still listen to their greatest songs.

      Since Eddie’s passing, I’ve been asking all my USC buds to nominate best EVH guitar solos, licks, etc. “OF ALL TIME.” I put up “Eruption,” as it totally shook up this little 17 year old boy’s head at the time. Lead into their cover of the Kinks classic. Back then vinyl must haves? Frampton Comes alive and Van Halen I.

      A friend of mine who also went to that US festival with me and who rocked far harder than I, nominated the riffs from Beat It. Hard to argue.

        [btw, the single coolest thing said about Van Halen was said by his son, “I don’t know how I’m going to live without our daily talks.” Hope he finds comfort in how much his dad meant to ALL of us]….

        My wife brought me up to speed with the EVH story yesterday. She’s my armchair sociologist. I just pontificate.

        I forgot that EVH was multi-racial–indonesian and Dutch. Evidently upon moving Stateside, EVH was bullied by the white kids in school but totally accepted by the Black kids. U dunno. Just sharing my wife’s research. Gotta wonder if he was driven to success by the lack of acceptance?

        The great state of Hawaii, the stalwart of our Western flank of Defense, the site of one of our worst “terror” disasters (Pearl Harbor), and one our our shining examples of a reasonably liberal society, has crossed over to the “dark” side (deep blue).

        I have a deeply conservative family member in Kailua OH and a deeply liberal family member in Hilo. Always interesting when we get together–which we never do any more. After almost 60 years together–sad.

        I’ve said it before, but I was raised to respect Daniel Inouye for his heroism and reasonably centrist beliefs, even though he was not of the party of choice in the home I was raised. What has happened to HI?

        All I can say about Maui is the people here are so sweet and family oriented that I have a feeling they don’t spend 2 seconds examining the lies being told to them by their representatives. You wouldn’t dare say Trump is better for Hawaii’s economy than Biden —they’d just look at you like you were crazy. And this is the way it is DESPITE Hawaii being in terrible shape financially —not only now but for the foreseeable future. I love this place so much that I didn’t even complain (and you know me!) when I was overcharged by thousands of dollars on property taxes for 2 years despite being a full time resident —I just felt “well, at least the money is going to the Hawaiian people.”
