Important Announcement About USC Blog

When I started this blog 29 months ago, it was going to be more of a hobby after covering USC for more than 20 years.

I never imagined it would grow to its current size and attract such a loyal audience.

Well, now it’s time to grow even more. Today, I’m taking the InsideUSC blog to Sports Illustrated. The new address is https://www.si.com/college/usc/

The new USC blog will be the same in many ways but will have much more video, more recruiting and a stronger “community” area for comments. I hope you will join me at the new site for even more USC coverage.

      Before a guy named Trump was event floated as a candidate, the liberal media machine had already labeled President Obama as “the deporter in chief.” Obama used his power to deport over 2.5 million in his first 7 years. Per the article I read, President Obama deported more in his first 7 years than all Presidents combined in the 20th Century (100 years). I haven’t bothered to update my data. President GWB deported fewer than the 44th POTUS, though he was similarly inclined.

      President Trump has been criticized for his border policies, but this is his treatment of NON-citizens. The NBA and the liberal media machine have no issues with the PRC’s President Xi Jinping incarcerating MILLIONS of his own people in “re-education work camps.*”. The ethnic Uyghur muslims are criminals in their own country. Is there some “soft” racism in the NBA for muslims? I’d have to ask Mr. Jabbar for his take on this.

      *Some call these gulags. They worked really well for a genocidal Joe Stalin.

Americans who can’t read between the lines and are unable to see around the corner are gonna be a little bit surprised when Chinese influence in our country reaches the point where First Amendment rights (right to freely engage in religious worship, right to peaceably assemble to address grievances, etc.) are severely curtailed. What’s already happening on these fronts is just a coming attraction.

    2. While some (most?) of the Israeli settlements in the West Bank are shameful, I think the moderate Arab states are coming to realize that Israel can help the area fend off the real infidel and malefactor in the region….the theocratic Republic of Iran.

      At age almost 60, all I’ve known in my life is terror and strife in the Middle East. The recent changes (along with of course the incredible accomplishment of Sadat/Begin/Carter) in the region offer some hope for a “lasting peace.”

      What to do with Iran is a “whole nuther thang.”

      2. I’m with you —I wish Israel would make things easier by not expanding it’s West Bank settlements. I understand Israel’s desire to do what’s best for it’s safety….but…it’s always a mistake to trample minority rights. Still, you’re correct —from a purely practical, political perspective [a lot of alliteration]— we need to throw in with Israel to ensure we aren’t faced with serious problems coming outta Iran. [The more I see what China is up to the more I think we have to redirect NATO toward curbing Chinese rather than Russian expansion —as a matter of fact, I’m all for making Russia and India part of NATO — once you call Albania part of the North “ATLANTIC” Peace organization, what’s stopping you from including Russia]?

  12. Lost in the Hunter Biden news feed was more good economic news:
    Retails sales jumped 1.9% in September 2020 (over August 2020) and a WHOPPING 5.4% compared to PRE-COVID September 2019!

    While some stimulus to small businesses and directly into the hands of the consumer is wise, the USA is in recovery mode. Unemployment will be stubborn from here on out, and RAISING taxes on employers (US corporations) won’t be helpful. Giving FEDERAL handouts to poorly run states and municipalities is beyond stupid at this stage. Better that those municipalities and states tap the robust (and cheap) Muni Bond market and/or choose to increase their own state taxes to meet their needs.

    No reason for all of us Federal Taxpayers to bail out profligate states.

      “The lead singer, long hair down to his butt, looked like a wild horse, no shirt on top, doing splits and all that,” says Simmons. “He was the predominant visual representation of that band. Musically, clearly it was Edward.”

      The songs played were mostly original, and all of them ignited with a guitar sound that was speedy and melodic, all bright colors and no trace of gloom.

      “Everybody’s head just turned around like Linda Blair in ‘The Exorcist’: What is that?” says Simmons. “When the solo came up, you couldn’t believe your ears because all this music was symphonic, the melodies and the runs and the speed, all coming out of one guitar.”

      Before Van Halen’s half-hour set was over, Simmons was backstage waiting to meet them. He ultimately signed the quartet to a contract with his production company, instantly sold on what he’d witnessed and anxious to get the band into a recording studio.

      After some sessions in Los Angeles, Simmons flew the band to New York to continue work at Electric Lady Studios, fittingly the studio built by guitarist Jimi Hendrix, another singular sound-scientist. Simmons and engineer Dave Wittman guided the 24-track sessions.

      “Some of the arrangements were mine, but mostly it was the guys playing their hearts out live in the studio,” Simmons says. “The great bands have a fingerprint that is unique. Even today, nobody sounds like Van Halen.”

      The recordings that emerged were never officially released but have been widely bootlegged and posted online under the title “Zero Demos.”

      And arguably, they sound better than Van Halen’s first album. This was a band that was clearly on its way to superstardom, and a video that brings new meaning to the old music industry cliche, “chasing the demo:”

    1. Does anyone know what happened to Markese Stepp? He had surgery one year ago to this day to repair torn ankle ligaments, and was supposed to have missed “3 to 5 weeks”. He still isn’t close to being ready. Did the docs f-up? Hard to believe “5 weeks” could have turned into 1 year plus.

      3. Stepp was interviewed in April of this year, 6 months after the operation and he was unable to run at that point. Something bad must have happened…I hope he will be ok. It is now a year and he still can’t scrimmage.
