USC Morning Buzz: Winners And Losers Of The Week

WINNERS

MAKAI LEMON

The wide receiver from Los Alamitos committed to Oklahoma, wisely. And since he is a Class of 2023 prospect, if USC ever gets it act together and hires a new coach, he can reconsider.

TAHJ WASHINGTON

An early breakout star of training camp. And it shows USC really won’t miss Bru McCoy with its large contingent of receivers.

MICHAEL TRIGG

The big tight end is another early breakout star in training camp who fell into the lap of Clay Helton.

ANDRE DE GRASSE

The sprinter kicked off USC’s gold-medal winners with a victory in the 200 meters.

USC TIES TO 4×400 RELAY TEAM

Imagine what could have been for USC track and field in the above picture of the gold-medal winners. Allyson Felix (left) attended USC but never competed as a Trojan. Dalilah Muhammad (second from left) was a four-time All-American at USC. Sydney McLaughlin (far right) had USC as her No. 2 choice before she signed with Kentucky. When she turned pro, her coach was USC assistant coach Joanna Hayes.

LOSERS

KEARY COLBERT

With three wide receivers committing to other schools in the past week (including two to Notre Dame), does the placid USC wide receivers coach deserve some scrutiny?

ATHLETIC DEPT. ANNOUNCEMENTS

The problem here is the way USC always rolls out bad news for fans, like last week’s tailgate passes. In small doses, which leaves many confused and then turns them off completely. Oh, and then it cost $496 for the pass. Welcome back from COVID-19 restrictions!

BRAIN DEAD STATEMENTS

Clay Helton thought no one would notice how he always compliments the strength coach the same way, whether he hired or fired them. Almost no one did.

DRAKE JACKSON

How is arguably the best player on the team in COVID-19 protocols before even a single practice?

BRU McCOY

Out of sight. Out of mind.

TRAINING CAMP HYPE

One site promoted a linebacker before the first practice who turned out to be injured and didn’t participate.

ALUMNI PARK CLOSURE

This was a place to tailgate on campus in past years but will now be a “game day experience” site where no outside food or drink will be allowed.

  1. Drakes dad is a coach at Centennial HS, they had to cancel a number of games do to a covid outbreak. Hmmm, I wonder if he was exposed while home on break? Duh.

    And then there’s this..

ruins can’t get a $5 fee for tailgating… heck they can’t get $5 for admission to the game.

    Hahahahaha

    1. UCLA is one percentage point above Nebraska. A clerical error kept them off the list.

  3. Losers:

NBC. Viewership was down 51% from the Rio Olympics, which wasn’t great to begin with

US Women’s soccer team. How glorious was it to see them LOSE, WOKE bitches.

USC. Where do you start these days? Charging people to tailgate ?

    Winners:

Clay Dough Helton: Another week, another fat paycheck for being a complete incompetent bumbling fool.

Pete Arboghast: How does this guy keep his job ?

  4. Here’s what some gambling site has to say about the PAC 12

A wide-open conference race means there is no dominant team, and that’s the case again this year in the Pac-12. Five teams will set the pace — Oregon (5/2 at BetMGM), Washington (7/2), USC (4/1), Arizona State (4/1) and Utah (6/1), according to the BetMGM odds board — with UCLA chasing as a 12/1 long shot. USC is the obvious favorite in the South, and the North is a coin flip between Oregon and Washington.

Trojans quarterback Kedon Slovis is the conference’s top Heisman Trophy candidate (28/1) after totaling 47 touchdown passes in two seasons. USC coach Clay Helton has underachieved with an 18-13 record the last three seasons, and he was lucky to go 5-1 last year, when Slovis led improbable comebacks to beat Arizona State, Arizona and UCLA.

Oregon returns nine starters, including senior quarterback Anthony Brown, on an electric offense. The Ducks are probably more talented than the Huskies, but Oregon drew a more difficult schedule with road games against UCLA, Utah and Washington. The Huskies avoid playing USC and Utah from the South and will host Arizona State and UCLA. Washington faces a big question mark at quarterback, so it’s tough to pick the Huskies to win the North.

The Sun Devils will be a threat with the return of quarterback Jayden Daniels, and the Bruins are hoping talented QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson has a breakthrough year for coach Chip Kelly, who’s 10-21 in three disappointing years at UCLA. Kelly has 20 starters returning, so this is his chance to move up the standings and finally reach a bowl. Of the Power 5 conferences, the Pac-12 appears to be the odd man out of the four-team playoff picture, but the league has opportunities to make a statement and test its strength in several marquee non-conference games.

    Live ‘dogs: Utah and California
Who’s the best coach in the conference? If you don’t answer Kyle Whittingham, it’s the wrong answer. Utah went 11-3 in 2019 under Whittingham, and this team might be better. The Utes return 19 starters and have the league’s top offensive and defensive lines. Baylor graduate transfer quarterback Charlie Brewer should lift the offense to the next level. The Utes get home games against Arizona State, Oregon and UCLA, and they are worth a shot to win the league at odds as high as 8/1 in the market. Cal coach Justin Wilcox is a defensive mastermind, and junior quarterback Chase Garbers is 8-3 in his last 11 starts for the gritty Golden Bears.

    1. Ever wonder if Clay has gotten tired of being called an ‘underachiever’ for the last 4 decades?

  5. Hey! don’t call people who repeat themselves losers… Every year I say the Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge Treble Clef thing. (Heck I say it five times in one day). I say that B and Bb are not the same note about twenty times a week. So repeating one’s self does not a loser make. Repeating a lie makes you a loser. Saying a student athlete is the great love of your life and then not moving in with them makes you a loser. (and if he had we’d be done with him) Giving away a game ball (that you didn’t pay for) for purposes of apple polishing makes you a loser. Giving away a game ball a second time makes you a double loser. Having no balls to give away makes you a Helton. (I see what I did there)

    2. In future media guides listing former head coaches I would be cool with clays inclusion if & as long as the only thing written for his bio was Apple Polisher.

  6. Great news that Tahj Washington is breaking out, but at 5’9″ and 175 lbs, he is not exactly a substitute for Bru McCoy, who is 6’3″ and 230 lbs. More like Trigg at 6’4″ 235 would be a better sub for McCoy.

  8. Where are these decisions coming from on the following: on Alumni Park closure – so it become a “gameday experience” I thought Alumni Park already a gameday experience for all Trojans gameday…a meeting and tailgate place …and the $496 parking permit with no supporting information on what that provides you…are these decisions from the USC athletic department or the USC administration….Who is responsible for these changes – have they spoken to Alumni and Trojan Fans about this changes and why they ae being made…I received an email for the parking permit and I guess will get one for the Alumni Park announcement soon…
