USC Sunday Supplement

USC baseball used to play some games at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, like this game vs. Cal in 1937.

  • Don’t ask me why, but in 1936, the USC football team stopped in Dallas to visit the Texas Centennial Exposition.

In the picture below, USC coach Howard Jones (in suit) sports a 10-gallon hat with his players. The guy without a hat is Braven Dyer, who was a Los Angeles Times columnist and eventually became a radio play-by-play/analyst for USC football games.

In the late 50’s, early 60’s, USC used to supply Dyer a hotel suite for road games.

  • In 1936, the USA sent three pole vaulters to the Olympics and all three were from USC.

Here they are in Europe getting ready for the 1936 Olympics: Bill Graber, Bill Sefton and Earle Meadows.

Meadows won the gold medal in the Berlin Olympics and Sefton tied for second. Graber finished fourth at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Sefton and Meadows were nicknamed “Heavenly Twins” because if they went any higher, they would need angels’ wings.

The duo tied for first at the 1935 and 1936 NCAA championships. Graber tied for first at the 1931 and 1933 NCAA championships.

  3. I HAD THE VERY GOOD FORTUNE OF MEETING BRAVEN DYER A FEW TIMES. HE WAS A REALLY GREAT GUY. HE WROTE A BOOK CIRCA 1952 ON USC FOOTBALL CALLED TOP TEN TROJAN THRILLERS WHICH I STILL HAVE. WHEN HE WAS IN HIS MID SIXTIES HE WAS COLD COCKED BY LOS ANGELES ANGELS MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHER BO BELINSKY BECAUSE OF SOMETHING BRAVEN HAD SAID. THE ANGELS IMMEDIATELY RELEASED BO AND BO NEVER AMOUNTED TO MUCH AFTER THAT. AT THE TIME OF THE PUNCH BO AND DEAN CHANCE WERE THE TWO ACES OF THE-ANGELS STAFF. I THINK BO HAD JUST

    RECENTLY PITCHED A NO HITTER FOR THE ANGELS BUT HE WAS A JERK IN MY OPINION PUNCHING AN OLD MAN AND KNOCKING HIM COMPLETELY OUT WAS A VERY COWARDLY ACT BY BO.

    2. Bo was a guy with a lot of talent and a lot of problems. They say he straightened himself out in his last years …and that he regretted all the shit he did when he was young…

  6. Braven Dyer is my favorite sports writer ever…wrote all the SC sports at LA Times in 50’s which used to be a great news paper until it went commie.

      3. Same here, Tim….I was reading a N Y Times article about getting rid of “racist middle school exams” and I realized the N. Y. Times wasn’t on the side of sanity anymore…. cancelled that day….

    3. HI TIM. MINE TOO. BRAVEN TRAVELLED TO SOUTH BRND WITH THE TEAM IN 1931 FOR THAT GREAT GAME. THEY HAD A COMPLETE FILM OF THE GAME. BRAVEN NARRATED-AND IT SHOWED AT THE LOEWS STATE THEATER IN DOWNTOWN LA TO RECORD CROWDS BRAVENSCOLUMN RAN IN THETIMES IN THE 40S AND I THINK THE 30s TOO.
