The way Lincoln Riley works the transfer portal, it’s a fair assumption USC will continue on an upward projectory as a team going into 2024.
But there’s a little matter concerning the quarterback.
Caleb Williams will be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, which leaves a gap at quarterback. So does USC really just have a one-year window for an elite season? Williams is generational talent. Whoever succeeds him won’t replace him.
There is one other possibility: Riley goes out and gets a quarterback in the transfer portal. That would be bold and certainly be a slap in the face to the returning quarterbacks and whatever freshman USC brings in for next season. But even in the transfer portal, it’s not going to be the case that the quarterback will be able to replace Williams. So is there a one-year window to win a title?

USC will likely find a replacement for Caleb in the transfer portal. Baker Mayfield and Jalen Hurts transferred to Oklahoma to be coached by Reilly. Both won Heisman trophies.

Is it beyond the realm of possibility to say Riley sees an individual talent in the recruited quarterbacks and exploits it for the betterment of the offense he builds around said quarterback?
I don’t see the end of success on offense coming with the matriculation of a student athlete. I expect a different angle of success coming from the next one up. Why would we accept the premise that these freakishly talented kids just happen to play for Lincoln Riley? Maybe Riley does know talent.
