This is a pretty embarrassing development.
A lengthy list of USC professors has signed a letter of support for the two USC students who were charged with allegedly stealing NFL jerseys from the NFL Draft in April.
Why is it embarrassing? Because of the letter’s language. It states, “Up to now press coverage, with its mug shots and sensationalized focus, has lacked important context as well as even the acknowledgement of any presumption of innocence.”
These are journalism professors! Some have covered crimes! They know it is standard to run a mug shot and state the facts of the case when someone is arrested. And what “important context” is missing from the story? Did they have an excuse for sneaking into the room and sticking the jerseys into their luggage when they flew back to Los Angeles?
The letter also states, “Once the full details are known to all parties, we are confident that (the students) will receive a fair and just outcome.”
Full details? Again, it sounds like their is a justification for stealing the jerseys.
Among the professors who signed the letter is Joe Saltzman, who first started teaching at USC in 1967. Ironically, he wrote the story for the Daily Trojan in 1958 that I recounted a couple weeks ago on the UCLA banner that got stolen from the Coliseum (picture below).
So maybe he has a soft spot for theft.
There’s also the issue whether it is appropriate for professors to sign a letter while a case is presumably making its way though USC student conduct. So they are influencing a case while decrying media coverage of having an effect on the same case. Got it.

I think Scott has a point. Seems like you should know the missing context if you write a protest letter that the stated press narrative is lacking context. These are journalism professors. They should know better. There is an unstated woke agenda behind the letter. The professors are likely angry that two minority students, one 38 years old, were arrested for stealing and are trying to create an issue when none exists.

Agree BigMac. Professors and graduate students have had hard-ons for athletes for a long time. My uncle played for the Oregon Ducks when McKay was the coach. John Madden and John Robinson were his teammates. He claimed that graduate students would routinely grade their papers and mark them down versus other students because they were jealous of the athletes. The athletes received all the adulation in high school and dated the best looking girls and the professors still resent it.
