Lynn Swann Denies He Plays Golf

Lynn Swann denied in an interview with the Athletic that he plays golf. But before I get to that, I want to highlight his defiant answer regarding his appearance at an autograph show.

“I would want my kids to understand it was a contractual obligation and I lived up to it. A lot of respect to (former President) Jimmy Carter as a person, but I’m not going to live my life in the Rose Garden.”

What a disrespectful and idiotic answer. Swann keeps spinning it as a contract issue. But the real question is why does an athletic director who makes $3-4 million per year need to do an autograph show at all?

Now to the golf:

Have you heard the perception that you play golf a lot?

“I haven’t heard I’ve been golfing all day, every day. I will tell you in terms of golf, in this year, if we go 365 days back, I’ve probably played six rounds of golf. And one of those rounds would be at a fundraising event for the men’s and women’s golf team which reports directly to me. One round would be at Clay Helton’s golf tournament, which was last year. The other round would be at the Trojan Football Alumni golf tournament.

“So yeah, those are the rounds of golf. I live within walking distance from a golf course that I can play and I’ve played it less than four times.

“Because you belong to a club means you play golf every day? Again, this is what I’m talking about. People write things with a certain tone, they say things with a certain tone because they have an opinion that might be negative and so they just throw stuff on the wall that shouldn’t really stick. But in our world of instant kind of media and everything else, people look at that, they say, “Oh, he’s out there playing golf. Well, OK, why is he playing golf?” I see that. I’m not worried about it. I’m not concerned about it. It’s one of those things somebody stuck out there for whatever reason.”

Swann said he has not heard he plays too much golf but at the end of the answer he thinks “somebody stuck (it) out there.”

He has heard the criticism and I will take credit for it, thank you very much. Just to recap, here are the major courses he visited since January.

January: Pebble Beach, Riviera

February: Augusta National, Wilshire Country Club

March: Sawgrass (Florida)

April: Augusta National

By the way, if we go back 365 days, he was at Augusta last year too. Six rounds in the past year? Really?

    1. Pudly76,

If SCooter isn’t calling him a liar, then I will. He is a big skinny liar. When he first initially took the AD job at SC, the LA Times interviewed him and he was practicing his swing by hitting balls onto a projection screen by the screen protraying where the ball would land on a course. The reporter said he did this a lot.

      1. So your point is that time at the simulator on campus is the same as a round of golf? Tell me was it during his lunch hour? You at least have the strength of your convictions, scottie lacks any strength or conviction.
Calling him liar would at least indicate a scottie actually believed the crap he tells people and could back it up.

  1. Both Swann and Wolf bend the truth to whatever fits their agenda. Wolf with his “sources” that don’t exist and Swann saying he has only played golf six times in a year. Wolf, a true journalist would do a little digging and find out how many times he actually played golf. Not visited a golf course but actually played. You know, investigative journalism to actually back up what you write. Swann is an entitled prima donna who has done nothing to help USC in his current position, and Wolf is a lazy, arrogant half baked quasi journalist who takes the easy way out each and every time. Take your pick, both stink to high heaven.

    1. Well there is this, there are sports writers out there (LAT) that might take up this challenge. If untrue, it could give them professional notoriety. They could have also investigated if Lynn actually shows up for work at 5:00am. Easy enough to verify. But it takes effort. scottie would have to roll out of bed early though and leave his mom’s basement exposing himself to sunlight before his return to his lair.

    2. Scott is keeping a bunch of people entertained everyday. Sometimes he does it with documented facts —sometimes he does it by twisting and contorting the truth. News flash —it’s all in fun. This isn’t a sports news blog. Its a sports chat blog. We expect & enjoy half truths here.
Swann is a different story. He books paid events for himself during the the NCAA tournament. He acts like a patrician snob with fans. And he accepts a LOT of money for a job that is plainly above his empty head
He should get fired for extending Helton’s contract alone —-or, for that matter, incorporating a $150,000 buy out clause into Kingsbury’s contract—–and certainly for not checking to see if alleged “walk- ons” are actually contributing to the USC Athletic Program (you know, the department he’s supposed to be running)…

      1. Still waiting for you to tell me which AD in D1 checks his walkons? And to be sure this isn’t a “sports chat blog” as you put it. Clearly anything and everything negative about SC is fair game for scottie here.

Has been for a long time.

      2. Pudly —My snarky reply wasn’t meant to be addressed to you, old bud. I wouldn’t be such a smart ass to you (others, yes, but not you). Sometimes replies get posted in the wrong place.
We can agree to disagree about Scott and Swann. No problem.

      3. Hey Pudly, they actually do check their walk-ons. They actually check everyone. The associate AD checks first and then the Boss reviews each team with the associate that is responsible for that team. It is a common protocol through out the country. I have been involved with multiple departments across the country. Coaching at USC in the mid-late 2000’s (pre swann) we dealt with both bosses, in checking our walk ons and scholarship kids. 90% of my kids were walk-ons and they were checked 2 times a semester at least. So my take is: Swann was pretty absent at best, derelict more likely.

  2. Hey facts are Swann makes >$3 mil a year…doesn’t matter to me what or where or when he played golf all that matters is when will he get sacked just as long as he is gone the sooner the better.

“There was a woman who drove from Atlanta, Ga., bringing her items that she wanted me to have signed that she had several people sign in the past. She said I was the last one, OK. She makes her plans, she takes off, she drives up there. People flew in from different places. To not show up at the last minute, not honor the contract, for people who had made plans to do that. I think, one, it’s disrespectful. No. 2, I think it shows a lack of integrity. Because something difficult is happening in one place, you decide not to live up to an obligation in another place? You can have all the words in the world and talk about integrity and being responsible but what kids see and what people should understand is your actions speak louder than anything else.

People want to talk about the perception of it. That’s just a perception.”

  3. I’m glad his unqualified, athletic director ass is finally feeling some heat, because USC athletics are at a all time low . The football program should bring more criticism to Lynn Swann by the half way mark of the season, because the Trojans will be lucky to win two games by then . My biggest fear is that Swann May have a hand in picking a new football coach at seasons end. Because as much experience as Swann has as a player, he has no idea what to look for in a quality coach . Clay Helton’s extension is a perfect example of that
