Take a deep breath for the weekly Clay Helton press conference: Helton asked why Lynn Swann has not backed him up in public: “When he’s ready to make a comment, I know he will. It’s his right to do it whenever he feels free. But he’s given me the utmost support.” Helton was asked about his job security: “Not one thing different. Same offensive and … Continue reading Sunday Night With Clay Helton

You probably heard Colorado fired Mike MacIntyre today. I liked MacIntyre so I’m not happy he got fired. But I’m posting this because it shows you can fire a coach with a game still on the schedule. The Buffaloes play Cal on Saturday. Colorado will probably also have a search committee and a real search run by an athletic director who has some administration experience. Here’s my story on the USC-UCLA for the Sporting News. Excerpt: “Within the football program, coaches fret over the lack of discipline, permitted because of Clay Helton’s laid-back, players-first style. The announced crowd of 57,116 was the smallest since 1950. Now on to some delusional quotes from Clay Helton, who got heckled by USC fans as he came off the field: “It doesn’t bother me. It rolls off my back, so I’m not worried about it. ““I know the job. The job is you win, people are going to pat you on the back. If … Continue reading Some Reaction To USC-UCLA Debacle

UPDATED II: What an utter disgrace. Awful on both side of the ball. Awful play calling. Clancy Pendergast is MIA on run defense. Clay Helton was asked after the game if he is returning: “That’s a question for Mr. Swann.” Fans screamed that Helton should be fired as he walked off the field. “It doesn’t bother me,” he said. “It rolls off my back, so … Continue reading Discuss The USC-UCLA Game

Another week to pick a USC game. Sigh. I’m actually tired of describing USC’s underachievement on a weekly basis. I wonder how many of you feel your health is affected while watching USC games? Does your blood pressure rise? Anyways, on paper, USC should win today’s game. UCLA is young and has won only two games. But now comes the but. USC could not even … Continue reading My USC-UCLA Pick
